BIRD NESTING BOXES
Some birds build their nests on branches or on the ground. Set aside some trees and dense bushes for them. Other species (known as cavity-nesting birds) raise their young in natural cavities (hollow trees, crevices in walls, etc.). However, these natural shelters are becoming increasingly rare…… but there is one thing everyone can do: put up a birdbox.
INSTALLING A BIRD NESTING BOX
What type of birdbox: Every bird has its own requirements. Take a look around your garden and identify the species that visit it to work out which type of birdbox is best. However, there are certain features that are common to all. Choose or build birdboxes made of fir, poplar or oak, as these are more resistant to damp. Unplaned wood allows birds to cling to the walls. Opt for thick planks (> 15 mm), which provide good thermal insulation and ensure the nesting box lasts longer.
Period: The best time to put up a birdbox is in autumn or early winter. Birds start looking for a territory very early on, so you need to give them time to choose the most suitable cavity.
Subject: The nest box must be sheltered from the elements. Avoid positioning the entrance hole in the path of prevailing winds (south-westerly), which will bring rain and freezing air. Also avoid placing it in direct sunlight to prevent the brood from suffering from excessive heat. The best orientation is therefore a compromise: north-east, east or south-east.
Position: Install it so that it is tilted slightly forwards. This will prevent rain from getting inside. To avoid fights, it is best to place nesting boxes of the same type apart from one another. As for the height, it depends on the species, but it should be high enough to protect it from your cat…
Mounting system: If you are hanging your birdbox from a tree, do not hammer a nail directly into the trunk. Attach your birdbox to two wooden battens, which you should secure to the tree using an inner tube or sheathed electrical wire.
Interview: Clean the birdbox in autumn. Remove the old nest (the birds will build a new one the following year anyway). Get rid of any vermin – some of which may be invisible – that have taken up residence inside by washing it with hot water. Do not treat the wood with toxic products or repellents. Simply use linseed oil for protection and walnut stain for colour.
