Kabambi – chic, ethical decorative objects for your home and garden !

Who are "Kabambi" ?

Living abroad for 20 years, mainly in Africa, is bound to leave its mark ! The word Kabambi is Swahili for something great, grand or gigantic. During one of our last trips to Africa we met craftspeople who do great things and have great ideas about developing craftwork, creating amazing articles from reclaimed or recycled materials and discarded objects. That's upcycling !

Our home reflects this encounter. Every object tells a story. The elegant photo frame in the hall is a harmonious creation of strips of coloured wood reclaimed from abandoned houses in South Africa. The cushions on the sofa, made from hessian coffee sacks, proudly display the heads of leopards from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On the coffee table a wooden candle holder evokes the dhow, a traditional Tanzanian fishing boat, abandoned on a beach from which it originated.

We decided to share our love of these objects on display by offering a collection of top-quality items, both decorative and useful, for the home and the garden which originate from Africa, North Africa, Asia and even France.

Design ethic

We like discovering and meeting people and are committed to having direct contact with producers and artists. So for most of the items on the website Kabambi is the only intermediary between local artists and the consumer.

See more about our artists in the section "Brands & Creators / Our creators and their environment".

The objects on our website are original, elegant items which are carefully made by craftsmen and women. Each decorative article, for house or garden, is unique, simple and hand-made. This last aspect is essential to the development of a local, sustainable economy. It contributes towards the safeguard of craft skills. It perpetuates employment in economically fragile areas where a stable job means a secure future for craft workers and their families.

Our way of thinking is both ethical and supportive and the items we choose are above all ones which catch our eye and are a successful blend of a raw material transformed by skilled craftspeople into a contemporary design object.

Objects with a story

The fact of being hand-made means that all of our items are unique and reflect the personality of the craftsperson who made them, the care, skill and material used. At Kabambi we photograph each individual article featured on the website, so the article you receive is the one you have chosen in the photo.

Our objects are all touchingly meaningful in the sense that they give materials a second life, thus preserving the history of the original objects. Colours weathered by sun and rain, wood smoothed by the action of the waves, metal rusted with age give our decorative objects a special charm. Now their story will become yours…

By helping the planet through recycling or upcycling, we offer an alternative to mass production and consumption. Feel good about yourself and be at peace with your inner self.

Authentic, ethical and chic – that’s us !
