Easy to clean: sponge with water and soap.

Foundation of Mifuko in 2009

Mifuko stands with one foot on the streets of Helsinki, and the other firmly on the red soil of rural Kenya. They combine contemporary Finnish design with traditional Kenyan handicraft techniques and African colors.

Mifuko was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers, Mari Martikainen  and Minna Impiö. Both Mari and Minna have studied Textile Art and Design at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and both have a Master of Arts degree. Minna and Mari have wide experience of work on different fields of design.

At the time when Mifuko was founded, Minna lived in Kenya with her family. Together with Mari she developed the idea of a design company operating between Finland and Kenya - and so Mifuko´s story begun.

Combination of natural materials and upcycled plastic fibrers

Mifuko Kiondo baskets are handwoven of sisal and food grade plastic. These clever baskets are great for many uses and will easily store toys, firewood, magazines, towels, kitchen accessories, pencils... or be used as a colorful cache- pot for your plants. The Kiondo baskets are great little helpers in home organizing.

Weaving sisal Kiondo baskets is a traditional Kenyan handicraft. Mifuko Kiondos are made by women´s self help groups in rural villages of Machakos country near Nairobi. Most of the artisans primarily employ themselves as farmers. The artisans weave Kiondos all year round, but most of the craft work is done during the dry seasons, when they have more time to concentrate on basket making. At times making a living as a farmer can be very difficult for the artisans in Machakos. Making Kiondos brings them financial security by providing an important additional income to secure a living also in times of a serious drought and crop failure.
